Muslims’ Qur’an obligations

The Muslim Ummah’s pathetic and disastrous condition is due to abandoning the Qur’an. We ridicule the last of Allah’s Revelations with our indifference. Instead, we must clearly understand our Qur’an responsibilities and fulfill them. We can’t expect worldly improvement or salvation in the Hereafter unless we fulfill all our Qur’anic obligations. The Qur’an requires five things from every Muslim: The Muslim must believe in the Qur’an, read it, understand it, act on its teachings, and share them with others.

First Obligation

Believe (faith) in the Qur’an’s divine origin. Faith consists of the verbal profession and heartfelt conviction. To believe in the Qur’an, we must verbally profess that it is the Word of Almighty Allah, revealed by His angel Gabriel to Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. This is a legal requirement for Muslim membership. After that, we must develop certainty in the Qur’an. Only when we have real conviction in that verbal declaration will the Qur’an influence our hearts and minds, leading to genuine devotion and adoration of the Glorious Book. Today’s Muslims lack faith in the Qur’an’s divine origin.

This lack of faith is why we don’t revere the Qur’an, study it, ponder its meanings, or seek its guidance in living. How do we gain faith? Faith comes from the Qur’an. If the Book is studied and its meanings pondered in an authentic quest for truth, all the veils of darkness will be lifted from one’s heart, and the soul will be illuminated by true faith. Faith can’t be planted externally. It embodies truths that already exist within us; meditating on its verses brings them to the surface of our consciousness.

Second Obligation

Our second obligation is to read the Qur’an with recitation and tajweed. A recitation is a form of worship that refreshes our faith. We must read it carefully, pondering its messages for life guidance. Our spiritual soul needs nourishment just like our physical body. Just as our bodies eat from the earth, our souls eat from the Qur’an.

A regular program of reciting the Qur’an is also needed because it refreshes and revives our faith and helps Allah overcome obstacles. The Glorious Book should be recited in the post-midnight prayer before one’s Lord slowly and patiently, pausing at proper places to allow one’s heart to absorb its influence. Reading the Qur’an at midnight is especially virtuous.

Third Obligation

We must understand the Qur’an. The Qur’an can be understood and pondered. Various planes of intellect and consciousness have different levels and grades of comprehension. It refers to the fact that the Qur’an’s teachings are not foreign to humans (pure instinct). They are eternal truths dormant in the human soul, and reading or listening to the Qur’an helps recall them. Almighty Allah made the Qur’an easy for this purpose. It doesn’t matter if a person has limited intelligence, poor logic and philosophy knowledge, or poor language and literacy skills.

Despite these disadvantages, he can still understand the Quran’s basic message and practical guidance if he is honest. Second-stage Qur’an comprehension is difficult. This understanding is impossible unless one devotes his life, talents, and energies to understanding the Qur’an. Not everyone can devote so much time and effort to gain such understanding. But there must always be people involved. It can’t produce such Quran teacher without a network of Quran-focused universities throughout the Muslim world.

Fourth Obligation

We must follow the Qur’an’s teachings. The Qur’an is humankind’s “Guide.” The purpose of this Book will be fulfilled when people follow its teachings and make it their guide in all aspects of life. If we ignore the Qur’an’s injunctions, reading and understanding it will only make us guiltier before Allah.

Every Muslim must live by the Qur’an’s teachings. Our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “No one can become a true believer until his desires are subordinate to mine.” The best way to benefit from studying the Qur’an is to adapt our lives to its teachings. At the community level, we must implement the Quranic social justice system. Muslims are responsible for establishing Allah’s Sovereignty in public and private spheres, and each of us must do our best. According to the Qur’an, its followers must fight for a just and equitable order.

Fifth obligation

We must spread the Qur’an’s message worldwide. Since Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the last of the Divine Messengers, the Muslims now have to deliver that message to all humanity. Proclaiming the Divine message to the world seems far-fetched and fantastic because Muslims are ignorant of the Qur’an’s teachings. A powerful intellectual and academic movement – back to the Qur’an – is needed to propagate and disseminate the Qur’an’s knowledge and wisdom, both on a broad scale for the benefit of our masses and on the highest level of scholarship to convert the educated and intelligent elite of Muslim society.
