So to make your journey easier and fun filled, I have come up with some tips to adopt before you go on your trip with your beloved pet dogs in India.
TRAVELING IN INDIA WITH YOUR PETS – YAY OR NAY?
So you want to take your dog on a trip with you in India? It’s not as hard as you might think, and there are plenty of places where dogs are welcome.
India is a large country with a diverse geography and climate. The Himalayan mountain range, which runs along the northern border, is home to several national parks, while the Ganges river flows through the lush Gangetic Plain.
If you are moving to India with pets, you will discover that there are many pet friendly places in India. Unlike most other countries, there are few restrictions on where you can take your dog. Dogs are welcome in most restaurants and outdoor spaces. Many shops will allow you to bring your dog inside while you shop.
Assuming your dog is up for the adventure, it’s pretty easy to take them on a trip around India. The biggest challenges you’ll face will be weather, other people and possibly public transport. We’ve had two dogs with us on our travels in India, so we have some first-hand experience of travelling with dogs in India.
Weather
India has a tropical climate, so the weather can be challenging for dogs. The most important thing is to avoid travelling with them during the hottest months of April and May. Temperatures in many parts of India can reach over 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) during this time.
If your dog has a lighter coat, sunscreen is essential to prevent sunburn (yes it does happen!). Also keep them out of the sun when it’s at its strongest – usually between 10am and 4pm.
It is important to choose only the dog clothes and accessories that suit well in the weather conditions at the place of travel. Most likely accessories such as fancy personalised name dog collars, dog bandanas, dog bow ties, and belts will do just fine if you are traveling within India. However, you must carry a couple of shirts, wrap-around clothes, blankets, and foldable dog travel matsfor them.
Traveling with pets can be a challenge, but it’s not impossible. Here’s a quick guide to traveling with your pets in India.
- Make sure you have the right documentation to bring your pet into the country. If you don’t, you’ll likely need to quarantine your pet for up to six months.
- Find a place to stay that’s pet-friendly. Not all hotels allow pets—even small ones—so look for hotels that do allow pets, or check out sites like Airbnb for houses and apartments that will accept your four-legged friend.
- Choose the right mode of transportation for you, your pet, and anyone else who might be joining you on your trip. Most domestic airlines allow small dogs in the cabin with you, as long as they’re in a crate or carrier that fits under the seat in front of you. If your dog is too big for that, fear not—he can travel in the cargo area of most airlines. You may have to pay an additional fee, but he will be safe and sound!
- Make sure you have everything you need to keep your pet safe and happy while on vacation!
